Coimbatore: The city police held surprise vehicle checks at various locations in the city on Sunday night and seized over 200 vehicles with altered silencers and tampered number plates. People found to be riding under the influence of alcohol were also booked.A team led by city police commissioner N Kannan and deputy commissioner of police (Traffic) S Ashok Kumar conducted a surprise check from 9pm on Sunday to 1.30am on Monday. The checks were conducted at 12 places, including Gandhipuram, SITRA, Thomas Park, Circuit House Junction on Avinashi Road, and Chinthamani Junction in North Coimbatore.The seized vehicles include 13 bikes with tampered number plates or without number plates; 24 bikes with altered silencers which produced heavy noise; and 183 bikes with no proper documentation (registration certificate). Police also booked 39 people for riding bikes under the influence of alcohol. An overall fine of 79,000 was imposed on riders who violated traffic rules. All the seized vehicles were kept in nearby parking areas and police stations. “Many college students and young men with high CC bikes are violating traffic rules by fitting silencers that produce high noise. Moreover, they usually operate their vehicles at very high-speed resulting in accidents,” Ashok Kumar said. He added that the city police are undertaking several measures to curtail accidents in the city, including surprise vehicle checks.
