Chandigarh: A fast track special court in Chandigarh Tuesday sentenced a 30-year-old man to 20 years’ rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting a seven-year-old girl in 2024. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on the convict.According to the prosecution, an FIR was registered at the Sector IT Park police station on Dec 8, 2024, under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Pocso Act.The court awarded 20 years’ imprisonment and a fine of Rs 50,000 under Section 6 of the Pocso Act. It also sentenced the convict to five years under Section 14 of the Act.The case was registered on the complaint of the victim’s mother, who alleged that she had left her Class III-going daughter alone at home while she went to buy milk. On returning after about 30 to 45 minutes, she found the accused, who would earlier stay in a nearby rented room, inside the house. The child later alleged that he had sexually assaulted her.During the investigation, the victim underwent a medical examination, and the accused was arrested. After hearing both sides, the court convicted the accused on the charges framed against him.
