Trichy: Two men — S Vignesh Kumar, 26, from Virudhunagar, and D Jagadish, 19, from Trichy — were convicted on Friday and sentenced to three years’ imprisonment and a fine of 2,000 each for three separate cases of chain snatching from women in Trichy over the past year. The first incident was on July 25 last year, when a woman riding pillion with her husband along the Trichy-Chennai national highway was targeted; another on Nov 11, involving a tuition teacher walking on road near Maruthi Nagar; and a third on Dec 16, when a college trainer was robbed while crossing the road near Samayapuram. Police registered three separate cases against them.The duo was apprehended during a vehicle check on Dec 21. Police recovered some of the jewellery from them in melted form. The trial began on Feb 5 and ended on Feb 9 at the judicial magistrate court in Trichy. Judge S Mohamed Suhail presided over the cases.On Friday, the judge delivered the verdict. In total, the two men were handed nine years of imprisonment each and a cumulative fine of 6,000.
