Udupi: Udupi Town police have arrested two persons in connection with five house-breaking and vehicle theft cases, and recovered gold and silver ornaments, foreign currency, cash, vehicles and other valuables worth approximately Rs 23.6 lakh.The arrested persons have been identified as Arun SV, alias Arun Achari,43, a resident of Perampalli-Kunjibettu and Kaushik,19, a resident of Garadimajalu in Tenkanidiyur village.Udupi SP Hariram Shankar stated on Thursday, that the arrests were made on Aug 23 at Santosh Nagar in Perampalli based on specific information. The police action followed a complaint filed by a woman from Bhagavathi Layout, who reported that her house had been burgled while she was away visiting relatives. According to the complaint, the woman and her family had returned from Dubai. After her husband left for abroad, she went to a relative’s house on Aug 8. When she returned around 11.30am on Aug 11, she found that the terrace door had been forced open. Cash, including 10,000 UAE dirhams and Rs 14,000, had been stolen from a drawer in a cupboard.Udupi Town police registered a case under Sections 331(3), 331(4) and 305 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).During the investigation, police found that the accused had allegedly been targeting locked houses and travelling on a stolen motorcycle before breaking into the properties. The investigation also linked them to the theft of a bike from a garage near Nejaru Masjid within the limits of Malpe police station.The items recovered from the accused included foreign currency and other notes valued at approximately Rs 2 lakh, 1.4kg of silver ornaments worth around Rs 2,86,730, gold coins weighing 1.5g, valued at approximately Rs 22,500, an autorickshaw worth around Rs 4 lakh, cash amounting to Rs 33,000, two mobile phones worth approximately Rs 13,000, a stolen motorcycle allegedly used in the offences, valued around Rs 45,000, a foreign wristwatch worth approximately Rs 30,000 and 88.4g of gold valued around Rs 13.3 lakh.Police said the duo was involved in five cases registered in Udupi and Malpe police stations.Police also said that Arun Achari had earlier served a nine year prison sentence in a Pocso case registered at Manipal police station. He was released from Parappana Agrahara Central Prison in July 2025. The accused were produced before a court and remanded in judicial custody.The operation was carried out under the direction of SP Hariram Shankar, and the guidance of ASP Sudhakar Naik and Udupi Subdivision DSP Belliappa. The investigation was led by Udupi Town police inspector Mahesh Prasad, with PSI Prakash and police personnel from Udupi Town and Manipal police stations participating in the operation.
