Kolkata: BJP on Monday appointed senior lawmaker and Alipurduar MP Manoj Tigga as national secretary, while oncologist and Mahila Morcha functionary Madhuchhanda Kar was named national vice-president in the new team announced under national president Nitin Nabin. The selection of the two party functionaries from Bengal is an attempt to combine experienced organisational hands with a new generation of politicians.Tigga, who began his career as a primary school teacher, has been a trusted lieutenant of BJP in the legislature. He served as chief whip in Bengal legislative assembly before being elected Alipurduar MP. Close to issues concerning tea garden workers, Tigga still lives at Gaudam Line in Singhania Tea Estate in Birpara, Alipurduar. He holds a BSc in biology from North Bengal University. “I will try to fulfil all duties entrusted to me by the party,” he said on Monday.Kar, a renowned oncologist, rose through party ranks via grassroots activism, serving as a booth polling agent during municipal elections and as vice-president of the state unit.Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the new office-bearers, saying the team combines “organizational experience, energy and grassroots connect”.
