Kolkata: A 19-year-old resident of Merlin Ultadanga survived a fall from a 12th-floor corridor window of the 13-storey Block III early on Saturday as he landed on the terrace balcony of a ninth-floor flat instead of plunging to the ground.Police said Saptarshi Bhattacharya, a hotel management student, was found lying injured and bleeding on the balcony, three floors below the spot from where he fell, miraculously escaping certain death. He has been admitted to a private hospital with multiple injuries and remained in critical condition.Officers from Maniktala PS said they were trying to determine whether Bhattacharya accidentally slipped from the corridor window or jumped. They are speaking to residents, examining access points on the corridor and scanning CCTV footage from the residential complex to reconstruct the moments before the fall.Police said Bhattacharya was undergoing treatment at home, a detail that forms part of the ongoing inquiry. The ninth-floor terrace balcony broke his descent and saved his life, though the impact left him severely injured. The incident has left the Ultadanga complex shaken, with residents awaiting clarity as police continue their probe into the circumstances surrounding the near-fatal plunge on Saturday.
