Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad traffic police have cancelled 1,855 AI-generated e-challans worth nearly Rs 15 lakh that were issued on Rath Yatra day, July 16, after finding that many motorists were penalised due to temporary traffic arrangements put in place for the annual procession.A senior traffic police officer said several roads along the 16-km Rath Yatra route were closed for security reasons, while alternate routes were opened to manage traffic. In many cases, roads that are normally one-way were temporarily allowed to carry two-way traffic. Similarly, restrictions on some no-parking zones were relaxed, while the entire procession route was declared a no-parking zone.However, the city’s AI-enabled CCTV surveillance system continued issuing e-challans based on regular traffic rules, leading to penalties for motorists who had followed the temporary diversions and parking arrangements.

Following complaints from citizen groups, the traffic police reviewed the cases and concluded that the violations were the result of a systemic issue rather than deliberate traffic offences. The department subsequently cancelled all such e-challans.Traffic police said the cancelled challans were mainly related to wrong-side driving and unauthorised parking around the traditional Rath Yatra route in the old city, as well as areas near Iskcon Circle and Memnagar, where other religious events were held on the same day.Officials said the decision was taken to ensure that motorists complying with temporary traffic diversions were not unfairly penalised.
