Coimbatore: As many as 183 candidates are in fray across the 10 assembly seats in the district, announced the district election administration on Thursday while releasing the final list of candidates after the completion of nomination filing and withdrawal process.Earlier, 450 nominations were filed across the 10 constituencies in Coimbatore. During the scrutiny process, 318 nominations were taken up for review, of which 115 were rejected due to various discrepancies. Notably, Thondamuthur constituency saw the highest number of rejections with 27 nominations being turned down. Meanwhile, 20 eligible candidates withdrew their nominations, reducing the final tally to 183. Coimbatore South features the highest number of contenders at 31, followed by Coimbatore North and Singanallur (28 candidates each), Mettupalayam (22), Thondamuthur (21), Sulur (15), Kavundampalayam (14) and Pollachi (13). The lowest number of contestants is in Kinathukadavu, where only five candidates are in the fray, while six candidates are vying for Valparai seat. Now that the candidate list is finalized, election campaigning has hit high gear across all constituencies in the district. In Coimbatore district, there are 27.44 lakh voters in the final electoral list after the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). The voters comprise 13.22 lakh males, 14.21 lakh females and 534 transgenders. In Tirupur district, 116 candidates are in the fray across its eight constituencies. While 178 candidates had filed nominations across the district initially, 44 nominations were rejected after scrutiny. Of the remaining 134 candidates, 18 withdrew their nominations, taking the final tally to 116. At 24, Tirupur South has the highest number of contenders, while Dharapuram has the lowest number of candidates at nine.
