Srinagar, Sept 26: As many as 1,469 schemes under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) have been physically completed across Jammu and Kashmir, of which 1,379 have been made operational, the J&K Jal Shakti Department has informed the Legislative Assembly.
The department’s response to an unstarred question raised by MLA Sunil Kumar Sharma stated that the remaining 90 schemes are yet to become operational, mainly due to minor connection and commissioning works. Some schemes have also been affected by damage caused during recent floods.
The government said the Jal Jeevan Mission is aimed at providing reliable piped drinking-water supply to rural households across Jammu and Kashmir.
According to the official reply, the Union Territory utilised ₹5,368.16 crore under the mission during the last three financial years. The expenditure stood at ₹3,875.47 crore in 2023-24, ₹1,478.01 crore in 2024-25, and ₹14.68 crore in 2025-26,
The department also provided district-wise details of household tap-water connections. Across Jammu and Kashmir, the data covers 6,251 villages and 19,24,646 households. Of these, 5,75,456 households had tap-water connections as of August 15, 2019, while the total number of household tap connections as on date is 15,66,716.
The district-wise figures show considerable expansion in household tap-water coverage across both Jammu and Kashmir divisions under the mission.
The Jal Shakti Department further said that the reliable and regular supply of piped drinking water depends on the completion of various schemes sanctioned under the Jal Jeevan Mission and the release of funds by the Central Government and the Union Territory administration.
The department said the Government of India has extended the Jal Jeevan Mission up to December 2028, and expressed that all villages in Jammu and Kashmir are expected to have adequate, reliable and regular piped drinking-water supply upon completion of the mission.
