Nagpur: The traffic police caught 122 motorists for drunk driving during a five-day crackdown from Aug 10 to 14, with Motor Vehicle Court imposing cumulative fines of Rs16.87 lakh.The action was carried out jointly by all traffic divisions of Nagpur City Police Commissionerate as part of efforts to ensure smooth traffic movement and curb violations. Drunk-driving checks were conducted at major and busy traffic junctions across the city.Sources said police have increased patrolling and drunk-driving checks in different parts of the city, and new nakabandi points are being introduced to prevent the menace.Police filed charge sheets against all 122 motorists before Motor Vehicle Court, which subsequently imposed the total fine of Rs16.87 lakh.The traffic police said strict penalties were also being imposed for violations under the Motor Vehicles Act. Drunk two-wheeler riders with valid licences are being fined Rs11,000, while those riding without licences face a Rs16,000 fine. Drunk four-wheeler drivers with valid licences are being fined Rs13,000.Drunk drivers of heavy vehicles such as trucks are penalised between Rs20,000 and Rs25,000, while repeat offenders face an additional Rs5,000 penalty over and above the prescribed fine.DCP (traffic) Aditya Mirkhelkar said the enforcement drive would continue. He warned motorists against driving after consuming alcohol or violating traffic rules. Mirkhelkar also appealed to citizens to follow traffic regulations for their own safety and that of other road users.
