MUMBAI: Powai police arrested a SIM gallery sales executive, the 11th accused in an engineering admission fraud case registered on July 17, after allegedly finding that he supplied fraudsters with SIM cards activated without customers’ knowledge. The 10 engineering accused arrested from Viman Nagar last month were released on bail on Wednesday.Police said Abu Saif (21), a Versova resident employed at a SIM gallery in the western suburbs, allegedly sold at least 300 SIM cards without documents in 2026.Sub-inspector Ramchandra Pinjarkar has identified 23 SIMs allegedly issued without obtaining documents. Saif has applied for his bail. DCP (West Zone-3) Datta Nalawade said detection teams — senior inspector AS Sawant, inspector Sushant Bandgar, sub-inspectors Prashant Kendre, Sagar Jadhav, Pinjarkar and staff — tracked the racket for a month by collecting details of money withdrawn from bank ATMs and petrol pumps, besides cash collected from victims.Kendre said court ordered a bank to transfer Rs 16.5 lakh to the account of the Powai resident who was duped with a false promise of securing her son’s admission to an engineering course at IIIT Hyderabad.
