Times News NetworkKanpur: Police in Kanpur Dehat arrested 10 alleged members of a cyber fraud gang and recovered 23 mobile phones, 15 SIM cards, Rs 14,400 in cash and a Splendour Plus motorcycle during simultaneous raids in different police station areas of the district.Police identified the arrested accused as Suraj, Raj Kumar, Shivam, Rajneesh, Gorey, Hari Om, Rahul Singh, Ankit, Sarvesh and Jai. The raids were carried out by joint teams of the cyber cell, surveillance, SOG and local police in cyber hotspot areas.The action followed instructions from superintendent of police Shraddha Narendra Pandey, after which a special campaign was launched against cyber criminals. During the campaign, the Akbarpur police arrested two accused while Gajner police arrested five and Raniya police arrested 3.During questioning, the accused said they cheated people by luring them with promises of getting benefits under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana and doubling their money. They also posed as police or vigilance officers, falsely accused people of watching obscene videos and extorted money by threatening to send them to jail.Police investigation revealed that the accused did not get money transferred directly into their bank accounts. They sent QR codes of fake IDs of online gaming apps to get the money transferred, then withdrew the cash and divided it among themselves. Police said they kept changing SIM cards continuously to hide their identity.Police registered a case against all the accused under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) and section 66-D of the Information Technology (IT) Act and produced them in court.
