Silchar: Assam Police seized banned narcotic cough syrup worth more than ₹3 crore from an egg-laden truck in Sribhumi district and recovered 126 grams of heroin in a separate operation in Cachar on Monday, arresting three alleged drug traffickers.In the larger seizure, police intercepted a truck during routine checking at the Churaibari police watchpost in Sribhumi on Monday morning. A search of the vehicle, which was carrying cartons of eggs, led to the recovery of 422 cartons containing 75 bottles each of Escof cough syrup, taking the total to 31,650 bottles. The syrup was concealed beneath racks of eggs to evade detection, police sources said.The driver, Salam Ansari, from an area under Mohammad Bazaar police station in West Bengal’s Birbhum district, was arrested. Preliminary investigation indicated the consignment was allegedly procured from Ranchi in Jharkhand and was being smuggled to Agartala in Tripura. Police registered a case under the NDPS Act and launched an investigation. The accused will be produced before the district chief judicial magistrate’s court on Tuesday, sources said.In Cachar, police seized 126 grams of heroin and arrested two persons from Chowrangi in Katigorah on Monday. Acting on a tip-off, police intercepted a car and recovered 10 packets of heroin concealed inside the vehicle’s engine compartment. The accused were identified as Baharul Islam, a resident of Tezpur, and Aminul Hossain of Sonitpur district. A case under the NDPS Act has been registered, and further investigation is under way to trace the source and destination of the contraband, police said.
