Nagpur: Nearly three years after the announcement, the Rs250 crore twin-flyover project on the busy Nagpur–Katol Road has inched closer to execution, with the detailed project report (DPR) in its final stages. According to senior officials, the national highway (NH) division of state Public Works Department (PWD) will soon submit the DPR to the govt for approval, following which the project will move to the tendering stage. Replacing the earlier plan for a continuous flyover, the revised proposal envisages two elevated corridors between Old Katol Naka Square and the New Katol Naka area along NH-353J, with a combined length of 2.25km. Senior PWD officials said the design makes use of the existing right of way, so there is no need for land acquisition.The first flyover, measuring about 1.325km, will begin near the Police Headquarters, cross the heavily congested Gittikhadan Square and terminate near KT Nagar. The second, around 925 metres long, will start before the Ring Road junction, pass over the busy intersection and end near the New Katol Naka toll plaza. According to officials, the stretch between the two flyovers will remain at grade as the intervening section has limited roadside development and is largely flanked by defence land. The design is expected to reduce construction costs while ensuring uninterrupted traffic movement across the two major bottlenecks. The project also includes widening and reconstruction of the entire 4.6km corridor with cement concrete pavement. The carriageway will be upgraded to four lanes with cement concrete service roads on both sides. The road currently has a seven-metre-wide carriageway in each direction, along with footpaths. The Katol Road corridor has undergone rapid urbanisation over the past decade and carries heavy traffic from residential colonies, educational institutions and vehicles bound for Katol, Chhindwara and adjoining areas. Gittikhadan Square and the New Katol Naka junction are among the city’s busiest intersections, with motorists facing long delays during peak hours. The flyovers are expected to ease congestion, improve road safety, reduce travel time and ensure smoother traffic flow along one of Nagpur’s busiest highway corridors.
