ZP election results 2026: What is at stake
Counting started at 10 am for elections to 12 Zilla Parishads and 125 Panchayat Samitis. These rural local bodies are seen as a key political barometer, offering an early signal of grassroots support for parties ahead of larger electoral contests.
Voter turnout stood at 68.28 per cent on Sunday. Parbhani recorded the highest participation at 74.89 per cent, followed by Kolhapur at 74.45 per cent and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar at 72.69 per cent. Ratnagiri saw the lowest turnout at 55.79 per cent.
The scale of the election was massive. A total of 7,438 candidates contested 731 Zilla Parishad seats and 1,462 Panchayat Samiti seats. More than two crore voters were eligible to vote, including 1,06,33,269 men, 1,01,86,965 women and 468 voters from other categories. Authorities set up 25,471 polling stations and deployed around 1.28 lakh personnel for election duty.
The polls were originally scheduled for February 5 but were postponed following the death of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in a plane crash and the declaration of state mourning.
As counting continues through the day, these early numbers are expected to shift, but the initial trends have already set an offbeat tone to Maharashtra’s rural political scoreboard.
