For the past few years, the sight of a large blue plastic drum has been enough to make many people uneasy. Once just a common storage container seen in homes and construction sites, the blue drum slowly picked up a dark reputation after being linked to a series of shocking murder cases across India.
Now, an Instagram user is trying to change that narrative in the most unexpected way. Instead of fear, she wants people to see creativity and sustainability.
A creative makeover for the blue drum
Instagram user Vidushi Malik shared a video showing how she repurposes the much-discussed blue drum for gardening. In the clip, she cuts the drum in half, places it securely on a stand, fills it with soil and turns it into a planter for growing organic fruits and vegetables. Sharing the video, she wrote, “Blue drum ka ek use ye bhi, wanna try? #organic #gardening #bluedrum.”
The video quickly grabbed attention. While some viewers were initially startled due to the drum’s recent associations, many appreciated the innovative idea. One user commented, “Blue Drum ka best image makeover.” Another wrote, “Not gonna lie, you had us in the first half.” A third added, “Right way to use a blue drum.”
The scare over blue drums
The unease around blue drums began after several high-profile murder cases where such containers were allegedly used to conceal bodies. One of the most talked-about cases was the killing of 29-year-old Merchant Navy officer Saurabh Rajput in Meerut. After the crime, his body was allegedly cut into pieces and placed inside a large blue plastic drum, which was then filled with cement in an attempt to hide evidence.
In Rajasthan’s Khairthal-Tijara district, another body was discovered inside a blue drum on the rooftop of a rented house in Kishangarh Bas. The deceased, Hansraj alias Suraj, had reportedly been murdered and his body concealed with salt. Khairthal-Tijara SP Manish Chaudhary said, “Hansraj was murdered and his body was placed in the drum with salt. This was a premeditated murder.”
In Jhansi, police arrested a retired railway employee for allegedly killing a woman and placing her burnt remains in a blue trunk. In Ludhiana, ragpickers found a decomposed body stuffed inside a blue drum in a vacant plot. Inspector Kulwant Kaur confirmed that the body was wrapped and tied before being placed in the container.
With multiple cases linked to similar containers, the blue drum became an unsettling symbol. But Vidushi’s video shows how an ordinary object does not carry intent, people do. Her gardening idea may seem simple, but it has struck a chord online.
