AMBALA: A 24-year-old woman was died on Wednesday night when a car allegedly driven by a drunk police officer, hit her e-rickshaw on National Highway (NH) 44 in Ambala’s Parao area.The deceased has been identified as Nikita of Model Town, who was travelling towards Ambala City in the e-rickshaw when the cop’s vehicle struck it. She fell from the e-rickshaw and was crushed by the car. Nikita was rushed to the civil hospital but was declared dead.
Amit Kumar, the accused head constable, has been arrested, according to Parao SHO Dharamvir.Family members of the deceased gathered at the hospital and protested against the officer. They even tried to enter the hospital where Amit Kumar was undergoing a medical examination. Extra police were deployed to control the situation, and the trauma centre’s shutter gate was forcibly closed. The situation was normalised after around four hours.The e-rickshaw driver, Ravinder Singh, said, “I was coming from Ambala Cantonment towards the city and had picked up four passengers from the bus stand. When we crossed Kali Paltan bridge, a speeding Honda City driven by a policeman hit my e-rickshaw from behind. The woman fell onto the highway, and the policeman ran over her. The accused officer, who was heavily drunk and could barely stand, was caught with the help of the public and brought to the hospital.”Nikita’s brother, Mayank, said, “My elder sister was returning home from her job in Gurugram. She took an e-rickshaw from Ambala Cantonment bus stand. A drunk policeman hit and killed her by running his car over her.”Dr DD Pandey, on duty at the civil hospital, said, “We received a female body around 9:30 pm. The body has been kept in the mortuary, and a police investigation is ongoing.”Parao SHO Inspector Dharamvir said, “A case of causing death by negligence has been registered against head constable Amit Kumar. His blood samples have been collected to determine if he was drunk. Action will be taken as per the law, and further investigation is ongoing.”The post-mortem of Nikita was conducted on Thursday, and her body has been handed over to the family for last rites.
