Udupi: In a case of alleged abetment to suicide, police arrested a woman accused of subjecting her husband to mental harassment, leading to his death.According to the complaint filed by B Damodara, 62, a resident of Kadaba taluk, his son Sudeep married Soumya Shetty of Kukkundur on Feb 17, 2026, at the sub-registrar’s office in Puttur. Following the marriage, the couple resided at Joduraste in Karkala taluk. On March 17, Sudeep, along with his mother, left home in a car to attend a puja function. Near Nelyadi in Kadaba taluk, Soumya allegedly intercepted the vehicle on her scooter, verbally abused him and threatened to kill him. Subsequently, on March 22, Soumya allegedly informed her relatives that Sudeep had consumed a poisonous substance and was admitted to a hospital in Karkala. He was later shifted to a hospital in Udupi and then to a hospital in Mangaluru for advanced treatment. However, he succumbed to his condition on March 29. The complainant has alleged that Soumya subjected Sudeep to mental harassment, driving him to take the extreme step. Following directions from the Udupi SP Hariram Shankar on April 1, the case was handed over to Karkala Town police inspector Manjappa DR for investigation. Based on preliminary evidence, the accused, Soumya Shetty, was arrested on Saturday and produced before the court, which remanded her to 14 days of judicial custody.
