Ranchi: Jharkhand Legal Services Authority executive chairman and Jharkhand High Court Justice Sujit Narayan Prasad took cognisance of a news report on Thursday, about the burning of a woman and her minor son on suspicion of practising witchcraft in Chaibasa district.The victim was assaulted along with her two-month-old baby boy and then set ablaze, resulting in their deaths. The woman and her son died due to severe burn injuries, while her husband was admitted to the Sadar Hospital in Chaibasa.
The incident occurred on February 17 at 9 pm in Kalaiya village in Chaibasa, when the 32-year-old woman was sleeping in her house. Her husband was called out of the house by a relative. The villagers accused the woman of being a witch, drenched her and her baby with kerosene, and then burnt them alive.Justice Prasad directed the JHALSA secretary and the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Chaibasa, to provide necessary legal and financial assistance to the survivors and their family members.The DLSA Chaibasa swung into immediate action and provided essential food supplies to the victims’ household. A sum of Rs 25,000 was also provided to the victim’s family on the direction of Justice Prasad. The DLSA was also ordered to conduct awareness programmes in the remote villages of the district.
