Patna: The legislative council witnessed turmoil on Monday as ruling and opposition MLCs locked horns after opposition members raised the issue of the alleged rape and murder of a six-year-old child in Darbhanga and the suspicious death of a NEET student in Patna.Leader of opposition in the Upper House, Rabri Devi, demanded the resignation of home minister Samrat Choudhary, saying such heinous incidents were taking place across districts and had increased after Choudhary took charge as home minister. Rabri also said CM Nitish Kumar should resign over cases of rape and crime against women in Bihar.
Nitish, who was present in the House, hit back at the RJD, saying no work was done during its regime. Standing at his seat, he criticised the RJD for failing to act when it was in power and said it was only after the current dispensation came to power in 2005 that overall development in Bihar began. The CM also asked deputy chairman Rambachan Rai to take action against opposition members who were creating disturbances in the House. The verbal spat between Rabri and Nitish continued for some time, though it was not clearly audible amid the commotion. In the second half of the proceedings, opposition members again raised the same issues. They also submitted a written complaint to the chairperson against BJP MLC Devesh Kumar, alleging that he had disrespected Rabri Devi by the language used.Rejecting the allegation, BJP MLC Devesh Kumar said the RJD should clarify how Rabri had been disrespected. “As per parliamentary and legislative procedure, when the Chairperson is on their feet, others should sit, but Rabri was standing and speaking. I did not say anything wrong. There is footage and it can be seen,” he said.He also alleged that during the episode some RJD members moved menacingly towards him and said he had lodged a complaint in this regard as well.
