For president, the party is looking for a leader who can steer it into the 2029 Lok Sabha elections while complementing the achievements of the NDA government under PM Narendra Modi‘s leadership. The new chief is likely to be an insider aligned closely with the BJP and RSS‘ core ideology.
The vacancy in the V-P ‘s post has left the BJP with the twin task of choosing a new party chief and a vice president for the country, where taking NDA allies along will be crucial.
For the vice president’s post, the BJP will need a candidate with the experience and ability to handle key constitutional responsibilities. Ahead of 2029, major bills like One Nation, One Election are expected, making the Rajya Sabha chairman‘s role crucial for both the government and the BJP’s future agenda.
Under these circumstances, a cabinet reshuffle appears imminent, with new faces likely to be inducted and some existing ministers reassigned. This would trigger a major shake-up in both the government and the party. With the Bihar assembly elections due later this year, the BJP is expected to embrace these changes swiftly.
A few days ago, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat triggered a debate on age as he turns 75 later this year. Bhagwat said that at 75 it is expected that you should make way for others. Dhankhar turned 74 in May this year. Though no age criteria have been defined for any constitutional post, age is a subject on which debate keeps taking place. In all probability, the resignation is going to lead a transformation in the way the BJP and the current government is looking at the future agenda of the party as well as the Viksit Bharat goal envisioned by PM Modi.
