Nagpur: A veterinary student was arrested for allegedly stealing gold jewellery and cash worth around ₹23 lakh from a sleeping passenger aboard the Bikaner Express at Nagpur railway station, reportedly to recover losses from online betting.The theft occurred around 2.15am on March 29. Harishchand Chandwani (65), a resident of Raipur, was travelling with his family to Ujjain in coach A2. His wife had kept a purse containing gold ornaments and ₹20,000 under her head while sleeping on berth K03. The purse went missing and was later found empty in the coach bathroom.The Government Railway Police (GRP), Nagpur, launched an investigation under the supervision of SP (Railways) Mangesh Shinde and other senior officers. Teams examined over 200 CCTV feeds from the station and nearby areas, identifying a suspect leaving the premises.Analysis of Rapido bike bookings and associated mobile data led police to Nanded. A team was dispatched on April 6, and surveillance was mounted on vehicles travelling between Nanded and Nagpur.On April 7, the accused, Rohit Duyyewar (23), was intercepted at Rahate Colony and was arrested after a brief chase near Friends Colony. Confronted with CCTV evidence, he confessed to the crime.Police recovered gold ornaments worth around ₹18 lakh, while efforts are underway to trace the remaining valuables. The accused has been remanded in police custody.Investigators said Duyyewar, a veterinary student from Nanded studying in Nagpur, resorted to theft after incurring heavy losses in online betting. The case was cracked through coordinated fieldwork and technical surveillance.
