Mandya: Upa Lokayukta Justice B Veerappa on Wednesday conducted a surprise inspection of the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) premises. The visit aimed to evaluate operational practices, infrastructure, and regulatory compliance within the market complex. The inspection revealed concerns regarding the accuracy and licensing of weighing machines. Several machines were checked to verify if they provided correct weight measurements and held valid licences. Additionally, it was found that many vendors purchasing produce from farmers did not maintain purchase bills. There was also a lack of transparency regarding selling prices, making it difficult to ascertain the actual profits received by farmers. Officials were directed to address these issues and implement steps to ensure proper documentation and transparency in transactions.Upa Lokayukta expressed concern over the reliability of weight measurements under unsanitary and disorderly conditions. Authorities were instructed to clear the area and enforce strict regulations to maintain accuracy and hygiene. Vehicles were parked haphazardly across the APMC premises. The Upa Lokayukta instructed officials to demarcate designated parking zones and enforce strict adherence to these areas to ensure smooth movement and better space utilisation. It was observed that several shops rented within the APMC premises were illegally sublet to third parties, with no official records of such arrangements. The Upa Lokayukta directed that immediate notices be issued to enforce that only original tenants operate the allotted shops, in compliance with the terms of the lease. The inspection highlighted the absence of clean drinking water facilities and public toilets within the market premises. Instructions were issued to install clean drinking water units and sanitary toilets at two or three prominent locations within the APMC to ensure hygiene and convenience for vendors and visitors alike. Veerappa emphasised the need for immediate corrective action and urged the APMC authorities to enforce stricter regulations, improve infrastructure, and ensure transparency in business practices. A follow-up inspection may be scheduled to assess the implementation of the directives.Upa Lokayukta said buses at the KSRTC bus stand must operate according to the schedule, as this will be convenient for passengers. He also visited the shop located within the bus stand and inspected the quality and pricing of goods.
