Thiruvananthapuram: University of Kerala’s academic council meeting on Wednesday approved a regulation allowing students enrolled in a degree course to pursue another course simultaneously. Previously, the university prohibited students from enrolling in more than one course at a time. With the changes approved by academic council, students can now earn two degrees by studying a regular course along with a distance education or online course. This system has been in place in foreign universities for years. The UGC granted permission for this provision as part of National Education Policy, allowing parallel courses alongside regular studies. The council also decided to appoint renowned writers, scientists, engineers and management experts as Professors of Practice in the university’s academic departments. The meeting was held after a six month gap. Although last week’s syndicate meeting was adjourned by vice-chancellor Dr Mohanan Kunnummal due to a lack of quorum, today’s meeting was conducted amicably, avoiding any confrontation with VC.
