Udupi: Deputy commissioner Swaroopa TK on Friday asked hotel owners to switch to alternative fuel sources, such as firewood and electricity, to continue operations amid disruptions to the supply of commercial LPG cylinders following the conflict in West Asia.Chairing a meeting on commercial LPG supply at the DC’s office, she clarified that the supply of domestic LPG cylinders remained unaffected. She said several hotels in the district had already begun using firewood and other alternative fuels, and urged others to follow suit. The DC said the hotel industry in the district employs around 25,000 to 30,000 people, many of whom are from other districts and states. Any disruption could force workers to seek jobs elsewhere, leading to a labour shortage in the future, she cautioned.Noting that over 80 sawmills operate in the district, Swaroopa requested sawmill owners to ensure the availability of firewood. She also directed Mescom officials to provide an adequate power supply if hotels opt for electric stoves. On a request from Hotel Owners’ Association seeking at least 25% of the earlier commercial LPG supply, the DC said she would write to the govt and pursue the matter.Office-bearers of Sawmill Owners’ Association said firewood would be sold at existing prices. Deputy director of district consumer affairs department Ravindra, and others attended the meeting.
