Chennai: A leisure trip turned fatal for two techies who drowned while bathing in the sea along East Coast Road (ECR) near Panaiyur. Police said 26 employees of a private software firm in Chennai went on a self-organised recreational trip to a beach on ECR. In the evening, the group entered the sea for a swim. A giant wave hit the shore and dragged two of them, Jai, 24, and Mayuri, 25, deep into the water. The colleagues raised an alarm and attempted to rescue them.Fishermen on the beach rushed to their aid and managed to pull Mayuri out of the sea. Thoughrushed to a nearby hospital, she died on the way. Jai, however, was swept away by the strong current and remains untraced. Search operations are underway to locate him. The Kanathur police registered a case. “After earning her MTech degree, Mayuri was recently selected for an internship with an IT major in Chennai in Feb this year,” said her father Harishchandra. Both Mayuri and Jai hail from Maharashtra. TNN
