Prayagraj: On the second consecutive day, the water levels of the twin rivers, Ganga and Yamuna, recorded a sharp rise of over 2.28 and 1.75 metres at Chhatnag and Naini, respectively, in the past 24 hours due to swelling tributaries in neighbouring states.As per the data released by district irrigation department’s flood division, Ganga rose by 14 cm and 228 cm at Phaphamau and Chhatnag, respectively, on Monday. Yamuna’s level increased by 175 cm at Naini on Monday after the addition of water from its tributaries. “Witnessing the rising trend of the twin rivers, an alert has been sounded in river bank pockets, and officials concerned have been assigned duties to take corrective actions,” said an official. He added, “The water level of the twin rivers is likely to increase in the days to come, and departments will be adopting corrective actions and measures accordingly.”Officials claimed that all preparations have been made in view of the flood-like situation. Officials have been asked to be alert and keep a close eye on villages situated on river banks. At Naini, Yamuna’s water level was recorded as 75.61 metres. From 8 am on Monday, Ganga’s water level rose to 76.78 metres during the 24-hour period at Phaphamau. At Chhatnag, the river swelled to 74.78 metres during the same period. The danger mark for both Ganga and Yamuna is at 84.73 metres. After the rise in the water levels of the twin rivers, people have started vacating their makeshifts and moving towards safer places. Personnel of the jal police are also on alert mode and are not allowing devotees to enter deep water zones.
