Hyderabad: In a significant step towards strengthening public healthcare infrastructure in Telangana, Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) is set to undergo a major expansion with enhanced funding support from the state govt.
The ambitious project, spread across 19.54 acres and covering over 26 lakh square feet, is being taken up at an estimated cost of ₹1,698 crore. Once completed, the expansion will add 2,000 beds to the hospital’s existing 1,639-bed capacity, taking the total bed strength to 3,639.
Officials said the expansion is aimed at easing patient congestion and enhancing specialised treatment facilities at the premier government hospital, which caters to patients not only from across Telangana but also from neighbouring states. The project includes construction of a new outpatient block, expanded emergency services, additional ICU facilities, and modern hospital infrastructure.
According to NIMS director Dr Bheerappa Nagari, civil construction work on the main hospital complex is progressing steadily. “Eight floors of the main building are already completed, and work is continuing on the remaining five floors,” he said.
He added that construction of the emergency block began later as a govt school located on that portion of the campus had to be relocated. So far, two floors of the emergency block have been completed.
The upcoming facility will house 38 state-of-the-art modular operation theatres along with hybrid laboratories. These operation theatres will be fully air-conditioned and equipped with high-efficiency particulate air filtration systems, creating a near-zero bacteria environment for complex and highly specialised surgeries.
Focus on paediatric care
NIMS also plans to introduce eight new sub-specialties, with a particular focus on paediatric care. These include paediatric nephrology, rheumatology, immunodeficiency, cardiology and oncology, among others. “Many of these sub-specialities are currently limited in the public healthcare sector. Their addition will significantly strengthen specialised care for children,” Dr Bheerappa said.
The expansion will also enhance diagnostic and research capabilities at the institute. The new facility will include three CT scan machines, two MRI machines, hybrid cath labs, CT-MRI facilities and an advanced digital laboratory, with the value of the new medical equipment estimated at around ₹100 crore.
Officials said the large-scale upgrade is expected to significantly strengthen emergency, trauma and specialised care services, while expanding access to advanced and affordable treatment for patients dependent on the public healthcare system.
