Dharamshala: The Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile has passed two key resolutions: one on the “critical situation inside Tibet” and the other on China’s “Ethnic Unity and Progress” law.The 7th day of the 11th session of the 17th Tibetan Parliament-in-exile on Wednesday, chaired by Speaker Khenpo Sonam Tenphel, began with the official solidarity on the critical situation inside Tibet. The motion was tabled by parliamentarian Tsering Yangchen and supported by parliamentarian Geshe Ngawa Gangri.The five-point official solidarity motion commended the courage and sacrifice of Tibetans who laid down their lives for the Tibetan cause. It called for the protection of fundamental human rights for the Tibetan people and advocated for the establishment of Tibet as a zone of peace, alongside meaningful changes in the current policies of the People’s Republic of China.The motion further demanded the immediate release of political prisoners, including the 11th Panchen Lama. It also called for an end to ongoing repression and brutality, as well as the cessation of environmental degradation affecting Tibet’s fragile ecosystem. A separate motion was adopted highlighting concerns over the Law on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress, passed on March 12 by the People’s Republic of China’s 14th National People’s Congress, and set to take effect on July 1, 2026. The motion was tabled by Sikyong Penpa Tsering and supported by DIIR Kalon Norzin Dolma.The seven-point resolution rejected the PRC’s “Ethnic Unity” laws as legally illegitimate and morally invalid under international and constitutional standards. Affirming that Tibet is an occupied nation, it called for the immediate withdrawal of policies of forced assimilation and urged a commitment to resolving the Sino-Tibetan conflict through peaceful dialogue.It further called upon the United Nations to review these laws and urged the international community to hold those responsible for acts of cultural genocide accountable. The resolution also encouraged Tibetans inside Tibet to uphold their cultural identity and maintain faith that freedom will return to their homeland.The House also deliberated and approved the budgets of the Bureau du Tibet in Brussels, the Bureau de Tibet in Paris, the Office of Tibet in Pretoria, the Tibet Religious Foundation of HH the Dalai Lama in Taipei, and Tibet House in Brazil.The House also deliberated and approved budgets of the Tibetan Freedom Movement (BRDL), the Election Commission, the Public Service Commission, the Office of the Auditor General, and the Auditor General’s branches in South India, Nepal, and Dekyiling.
