CHENNAI: Flying squads and static surveillance teams of the Election Commission seized nearly Rs 3 lakh in unaccounted cash during vehicle checks across the city on Wednesday and deposited it in the treasury.The action comes amid intensified enforcement ahead of the Tamil Nadu assembly elections slated for April 23. As per Election Commission’s standard operating procedures and model code of conduct, goods worth over Rs 10,000 without valid documents and cash exceeding Rs 50,000 carried without proper proof are liable for seizure.
The amount can be reclaimed if valid documents are later produced before the appellate authority.Across Chennai district, 48 flying squads (three/constituency) and 48 static surveillance teams have been deployed.These teams operate in three shifts to monitor violations and take action.During Wednesday’s checks, Rs 55,400 was seized at Velachery constituency by flying squads, while static teams seized Rs 51,000 in Dr Radhakrishnan Nagar and Rs 1,89,900 in Harbour constituency, taking the total to Rs 2,96,300.
