CHENNAI: MDMK on Wednesday signed an agreement with DMK to contest in four constituencies in the upcoming assembly election in Tamil Nadu. According to the agreement, MDMK will contest in three constituencies on DMK’s rising sun symbol and in the remaining one constituency, it will contest on a symbol allocated by the Election Commission of India (ECI). The decision to contest on an independent symbol in a constituency was taken at the high-level committee meeting held at their party headquarters in Chennai in the morning. Sources, who attended the meeting, said the objective of the party in the assembly election is to defeat BJP and its allies and not to demand seats from DMK and to create trouble in the alliance. MDMK held only one round of talks with DMK’s seat-sharing committee led by party treasurer T R Baalu in which they demanded additional seats when compared to the 2021 assembly election to contest in their own symbol and a Rajya Sabha seat. In the 2021 assembly election, MDMK contested in six seats, all in DMK’s Rising Sun symbol, and won four seats.
