Surat: In a proud moment for Surat, three players from the city have been selected for the Indian Wheelchair Cricket Team, just ahead of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on Wednesday. Their selection follows outstanding performances at the National Wheelchair Cricket Tournament organised by the Divyang Cricket Control Board of India.Manish Sharma, a trained Divyang cricket coach, has been appointed team coach, while Parshuram Desle has been named vice-captain. All-rounder Milan Ahir has also secured his spot in the squad. The trio will participate in the Umang National Wheelchair Cricket Tournament, a prestigious four-day event beginning Dec 8 at the Old Camping Ground in Bhopal. Teams from India, Nepal and Sri Lanka will compete in the tournament, which holds a significant place in the para-sports calendar. All three players have been trained at a cricket academy run by Dhansukh Patel, a farmer from Umber village near Surat. A former professional cricketer, Patel has been offering free coaching to differently-abled athletes for several years, nurturing their talent and confidence. So far, he has trained nine players who have reached the national level, three of whom have now earned a place in the Indian team.“Disabled players possess exceptional strength. With the right guidance and opportunities, they can shine at both the national and international levels,” Patel said. “The success of these three players brings me joy that feels truly personal.”At his academy near Umber village, Patel trains underprivileged and disabled sportspersons. “Our academy is ready to support and train deserving Divyang cricketers. With dedication, they can secure great opportunities. What we need now is for society to encourage and promote para-sports on a wider scale,” he added.
