During the previous hearing on February 20, 2026, a bench of the Supreme Court had directed the Calcutta High Court to depute serving and former judicial officers to assist in the SIR process. The court observed that a persistent trust deficit between the Mamata Banerjee government and the Election Commission had resulted in a stalemate even as the deadline for finalising the rolls drew close.

Following the Supreme Court’s direction, around 250 judicial officers joined the last leg of the SIR exercise on February 23, 2026.
The top court’s intervention aims to ensure transparency and timely completion of the revision process amid mounting political tensions in the State.
