Cardiovascular diseases remain one of the biggest health challenges in India today. According to research, India accounts for nearly one-fifth of the world’s cardiovascular disease (CVD) deaths, and Indians often develop heart conditions almost a decade earlier than people in many Western countries.
To address this growing concern, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Limited (Sun Pharma) recently launched the ‘Heart ke Liye 8’ under its public awareness initiative – Making India Heart Strong’ campaign. The initiative encourages individuals to adopt simple 8 daily habits that support long-term heart health.

The campaign delivers a positive and practical message: heart health isn’t shaped by occasional efforts or just one or two good habits. It’s built through eight simple, consistent lifestyle choices practiced every day.
At the heart of the campaign stands the “Heart-Strong Man,” a warm and relatable character who embodies what it truly means to have a healthy, nurtured heart—one strengthened by awareness, balance, and everyday care. He represents the power of small, consistent choices, encouraging people to adopt simple habits not 1 or 2 but 8 habits that build long-term heart wellness. Approachable and motivating, the Heart-Strong Man acts as a friendly guide, making heart health feel achievable, empowering, and a natural part of daily life.
Here are the eight pillars of heart health highlighted by the campaign.
1. Eat a balanced and Healthy diet
Healthy eating is one of the most effective ways to protect the heart. Diets rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins can help maintain cardiovascular health. Limiting excessive salt, sugar and processed foods also plays an important role in preventing heart-related conditions.
2.-Regular Physical Activity
Regular physical activity strengthens the heart and improves overall cardiovascular fitness. Activities such as walking, cycling, yoga or sports help improve circulation, manage weight and reduce the risk of heart disease when practiced consistently.
3. Maintain a healthy body weight
Excess weight can increase the risk of several heart-related conditions including hypertension, diabetes and high cholesterol. Managing weight through a balanced diet and regular exercise is a key step in maintaining heart health.
4. Monitor blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol
Keeping critical health indicators under control is essential for preventing cardiovascular complications. Regular monitoring and timely medical consultation can help manage high blood pressure, elevated blood sugar and cholesterol levels before they lead to serious problems.
5. Quit Smoking
Tobacco consumption is one of the leading risk factors for heart disease. Quitting smoking and avoiding tobacco products can significantly reduce the risk of heart attacks, stroke and other cardiovascular complications.
6. Go for regular heart health check-ups
Routine health check-ups enable early detection of potential cardiovascular risks. Regular screenings help individuals identify warning signs early and take preventive steps to protect their heart health.
7. Manage stress effectively
Chronic stress can negatively impact cardiovascular health by increasing blood pressure and triggering unhealthy coping habits. Practices such as meditation, mindfulness, exercise and maintaining work-life balance can help manage stress more effectively.
8. Prioritise quality sleep
Adequate and restful sleep plays a crucial role in maintaining heart health. Poor sleep patterns are linked to higher risks of hypertension, obesity and other cardiovascular conditions. Establishing a regular sleep schedule can support overall wellbeing.
In addition, the campaign focuses on evidence generation and patient education, with heart health awareness programmes reaching more than 15 million individuals each year through clinics and educational initiatives. By combining lifestyle awareness with community outreach and education, the initiative aims to encourage individuals across the country to adopt heart-healthy habits and contribute to the long-term reduction of cardiovascular disease in India.
