Silchar: An intense cyclonic storm battered parts of Cachar district, including Silchar town, on Sunday afternoon, uprooting trees, snapping power lines and throwing normal life out of gear. The worst-hit areas included Malugram, Tarapur and the DC Office enclave, where several decades-old trees were uprooted, blocking key roads and damaging nearby infrastructure. In multiple locations, including Circuit House Road and Dakbangla Road, fallen trees crushed parked vehicles and brought traffic to a standstill.Stretches near the divisional forest office and Urban Hospital on Silchar Trunk Road were also blocked, while tin roofs being blown off houses and shops added to residents’ distress. Similar damage was reported from Katigorah and adjoining areas.Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as strong winds and heavy rain swept through the town within minutes. “We had barely begun recovering from the earthquake (that jolted Cachar district in the morning) when the storm triggered fresh panic,” a resident of Tarapur said. The storm caused widespread power outages after electric poles and overhead wires were damaged. Residents reported prolonged disruption to daily life as restoration work began on a war footing.Teams from SDRF, CQRT and Cachar district administration have been deployed to clear debris and restore road connectivity. Officials of the district disaster management authority said the situation is being closely monitored and urged people to remain cautious.
