Mangaluru: Former chief minister M Veerappa Moily lauded the contributions of MN Rajendra Kumar, chairman of the South Canara District Central Cooperative Bank (SCDCC Bank), describing him as a guiding force in strengthening the cooperative movement in the coastal region.Speaking at Kumar’s 77th birthday celebrations, on Tuesday, Moily said Kumar was entrusted with significant responsibility over three decades ago, based on trust, and has since played a pivotal role in expanding and consolidating the cooperative sector. He noted that Kumar has set a remarkable record by serving as president for 33 years, surpassing the 25-year tenure of Molahalli Shiva Rao.Moily also credited Kumar with identifying and nurturing new talent and building a strong cooperative ecosystem in the coastal belt. Referring to the region as the birthplace of several major banks, he expressed concern over the merger of three banks, and stressed the importance of preserving strong, locally rooted cooperative institutions.Describing him as a pioneer, Moily said Kumar helped build and expand the cooperative network from modest beginnings, and contributed significantly to its growth across the region.Assembly speaker UT Khader said a meaningful life is defined by compassion, trust, and service to others, and noted that Rajendra Kumar’s journey reflected those ideals.MLA D Vedavyas Kamath presided over the function. As part of the celebrations, various welfare facilities were distributed to 77 beneficiaries. Kumar expressing gratitude, said he would continue working for the poor.
