Coimbatore: The city police are planning to install CCTV cameras mounted on a pole with an emergency call (SOS) button and speakers in front of educational institutions under the Safe Kovai (SaKo) initiative to help the girl students in distress and ensure their safety. Christened SaKo pole, the devices on it would be linked to the modern control room of the city police, who would respond to the distress call immediately. It will enable two-way communication.City police commissioner A Saravana Sundar said, “With the help of NGO Uyir, we will approach the management of all schools and colleges soon and request them to install SaKo poles in front of their educational institutions. A dedicated team of police personnel will be deployed to attend to the distress calls. Whenever girl students feel unsafe, they could press the emergency button to contact the police control room. Police officers there will immediately respond to it and alert the nearest beat police officers to visit the area and assist the person in trouble.”City’s first SaKo pole was inaugurated by former electricity minister V Senthil Balaji at a bus stop near the Govt Polytechnic College for Women on Dr Balasundaram Road on March 9. The Safe Kovai initiative was launched to create a safe environment for women and children in the city. Police had initially unveiled the plans to install SaKo poles at 200 of the 350 bus stops in the city in the first phase. “We have requested Rs15 crore from the govt to implement the project across the city.
