The state has approximately 5,000 gram panchayat-level federations of SHGs, which are instrumental in empowering women. To support them, marketing platforms such as melas (fairs), are organised for the sale of SHG products. Furthermore, women-centric guarantee schemes aimed at empowering women and uplifting vulnerable groups were successfully implemented by the govt, benefiting thousands of families across the state, said Patil.The minister added that when women receive financial assistance or benefits, they prioritise their families’ wellbeing over personal spending. “Achieving tangible change for ordinary citizens requires an increase in family incomes. Therefore, empowering women is crucial for national prosperity, particularly for boosting the income of rural households. The govt is firmly committed to the belief that the sustainable development of rural families can only be achieved through women,” he noted.Assembly speaker UT Khader lauded the efforts of SHGs and said that women were sending a strong message that they are strong pillars, not just for their families, but to the country’s economic development too.Empowering women helps nation building, he said, and recalled how women in Dakshina Kannada worked in the cashew industry and beedi and fishing sector to earn a livelihood for decades. “The role of women in creating a harmonious society is commendable,” he said.Dakshina Kannada MP Capt Brijesh Chowta, Mangaluru City South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath, deputy commissioner Darshan HV and zilla panchayat CEO Narwade Vinayak Karbhari were present.
