Ahmedabad: Jewellery, cash and foreign currency worth around Rs 23.03 lakh were stolen from a third-floor flat in Navrangpura on Monday evening when the occupants briefly stepped out, police said. A complaint in this regard was filed with Navrangpura police on Tuesday by Shital Somani (28), a private employee working from home as a pharma consultant.According to the FIR, Shital lives with her family at Nakshatra Apartments, off CG Road. On Feb 9, around 5.30pm, she left the house with her mother, Rajshree, to buy groceries. At the time, her sister-in-law, Sunanda, was at home. About 10 minutes later, while Shital and her mother were near Commerce Six Roads, Sunanda called to inform them that she locked the main door and left for her parental home.Shital and her mother returned around 7pm. While attempting to unlock the main door, they noticed that the latch was loose and came off, raising suspicion. On entering the flat, they noticed no disturbance in the hall. However, when they checked Rajshree’s bedroom, they found the plywood wardrobe open, and several drawers rummaged through.Police said gold jewellery, silver articles, cash and foreign currency were missing from the wardrobe drawers. The stolen items included multiple gold ornaments such as a mangalsutra with a diamond-studded pendant, earrings, bangles and chains, collectively weighing several tolas; silver anklets and religious silver items; Rs 35,000 in cash; 3,000 dirhams; 2,000 US dollars; and 200 euros. The total value of the stolen property was estimated at Rs 23.03 lakh. The jewellery was reportedly 15 to 20 years old and of different carats and designs. The complainant immediately informed her father and sister-in-law, following which a police complaint was lodged. Investigators suspect that an unidentified burglar used a tool to force open the latch of the main door and committed the theft between 6.30pm and 7pm.Navrangpura police registered a case of house burglary and theft and began an investigation.
