Ahmedabad: Unidentified thieves stole Rs 20 lakh belonging to an angadia firm after allegedly breaking open the storage compartment of a scooter parked near the Stadium Five Roads in Navrangpura on Tuesday afternoon. Police said the suspects used a diversion tactic to distract the employee before fleeing with the cash.According to a complaint filed with Navrangpura police, the victim, Ramesh Patel (64), a resident of Naroda, worked with an angadia firm operating from the Trade Centre building near the Stadium Five Roads. On Tuesday afternoon, his employer, Suresh Patel, asked him to collect cash from a shop located on the first floor of Suvarnakala Complex near Punjabi Hall.Patel reached the complex on his scooter and collected Rs 20 lakh from the firm’s client. He placed the cash in a yellow cloth bag and kept it inside the scooter’s storage compartment before returning to the Trade Centre building around 3.35pm.While he was about to unlock the scooter, a biker wearing a chequered shirt and a black helmet approached him and asked for directions to the Income Tax area. After Patel explained the route, the man left the spot. Moments later, Patel noticed that the scooter’s storage compartment was slightly open. On checking, he found that the bag containing the cash was missing. Police suspect that while one of the accused distracted the employee, another accomplice broke open the scooter’s compartment using a tool and stole the bag.Patel informed his employer, and they checked nearby CCTV footage, which showed a man with his face covered with a cloth walking away with a yellow bag.Navrangpura police registered a case of theft against unidentified persons and launched a probe. Investigators are scanning CCTV footage from nearby roads to trace the suspects.
