Gorakhpur: Doctors at AIIMS Gorakhpur found the extremely rare Bombay (Oh) blood group in a patient admitted to the institute, highlighting the hospital’s advanced capabilities in immunohematology and transfusion medicine.According to Saurabh Murti, faculty in charge of department of transfusion medicine, the Bombay blood group is among rarest blood types in the world. In India, its occurrence is estimated to be between one in 7,600 and one in 10,000 individuals. People with this phenotype lack the H antigen and can receive blood only from donors with the same Bombay phenotype, making early detection crucial for safe transfusion planning.The detailed immunohematological evaluation was carried out by Monisha and Niranjan, senior residents, along with Parsha, junior resident, in the institute’s immunohematology laboratory.Maj Gen Vibha Dutta (Retd), executive director and CEO of the institute, said the achievement reflects AIIMS Gorakhpur’s commitment to providing state-of-the-art diagnostic and transfusion services to people in Purvanchal.
