New Delhi: For many commuters in south Delhi, the daily crawl through Sangam Vihar, Maa Anandmayee Marg, Pul Prahladpur and Badarpur is not just routine, but a test of patience. Gridlocked stretches, chaotic intersections and unpredictable delays have long defined these routes, where even short distances can extend into hours during peak traffic.Against this backdrop, a Rs 1.5 crore sanction by Public Works Department (PWD) to appoint a Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) consultant for a feasibility study and detailed project report (DPR) signals the first step towards easing the pressure. The two stretches in focus, Sangam Vihar to Maa Anandmayee Marg and Pul Prahladpur to Badarpur, are among the busiest links in this part of the city. Sangam Vihar, one of Delhi’s most densely populated neighbourhoods, depends heavily on Maa Anandmayee Marg to access the rest of the capital. Office-goers, school buses and emergency vehicles all funnel through the same corridor, often getting stuck in long bottlenecks.Moving further along, the Pul Prahladpur to Badarpur stretch serves as a crucial gateway between Delhi and Faridabad, carrying heavy interstate traffic every day. As a result, delays here often mean missed office hours, late school arrivals and long, exhausting commutes. To address this, the feasibility study is expected to take a detailed look at traffic flow, ground conditions and structural constraints. This will include traffic assessments, topographical mapping and soil testing. It will also explore practical solutions such as road widening, flyovers or underpasses, better drainage systems to prevent waterlogging, and safer pedestrian infrastructure.Once completed, the DPR will act as the blueprint for execution, laying out engineering designs, cost estimates and timelines. The project is being planned alongside a Delhi Metro corridor so that road and metro infrastructure can be developed together, making better use of limited urban space. These stretches have not only come under focus in this proposal, but have also been central to several other infrastructure plans in recent years. For instance, TOI reported last week that PWD has received approval for a Rs 1,471 crore integrated elevated road project along Mehrauli-Badarpur road. Under this, one segment from Saket G Block to Sangam Vihar will see an integrated elevated structure built by DMRC, while another stretch from Maa Anandmayee Marg to Pul Prahladpur will combine metro and road infrastructure within a single design.
