Nagpur: The public hearing over the proposed parallel license to Torrent Power Ltd (TPL) for the distribution of electricity in areas under Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) and surrounding areas in the district will be held today. Around 30 people and organisations are likely to give suggestions and objections in the hearing, which will be held online.Power experts have claimed that the replies from TPL were generalised and still many things are unclear. “I received a reply from TPL, and it seems that it is a general reply submitted to all the objectors without even mentioning the name of the objector. My queries were not answered properly. Their answers should remove doubts in the minds of electricity consumers in the licensee area,” said Goenka. Some of the queries which were not replied to by TPL included, ‘whether there shall be parallel distribution charges applicable to consumers to compensate MSEDCL‘ and ‘what will be the method of migration and whether the existing agreement with MSEDCL shall be terminated immediately’. Goenka also asked queries regarding tariffs for different categories of consumers, but these were also not responded to, claimed Goenka. However, the power expert maintained that there is a need for parallel distribution licensees to develop competition in the power sector and to break the monopolistic nature of the business.
