Udupi: A woman was booked for cheating a property owner by creating a fake tax payment receipt.Police said property owner Ananda Suvarna handed over Rs 34,730 to Shalini, a broker, to pay property tax dues of 12 years. Shalini gave Suvarna a tax paid receipt on Oct 16, 2025. After reading news reports about property tax frauds in the media, Suvarna, with the help of his daughter, checked the status of property tax by logging into the portal of the municipality. Upon checking the portal, it was found that the tax payment was pending and was not completed. Following this, Suvarna raised the issue with Mahantesh Hangargi, commissioner of Udupi City Municipality, on Feb 16.Shalini allegedly misused the tax money given by Suvarna, did not pay it to the govt, and along with others, committed fraud against the govt by placing the bank’s seal on the challan. Based on a complaint filed by the commissioner, Udupi Town police registered a case under Sections 336(2), 336(3), 340(2), 318(4) and 3(5) of the BNS.
