Gaya: Notwithstanding the Supreme Court’s disapproval of unnecessary delays in criminal investigations, the probe into a high-profile case against Jehanabad MP Surendra Prasad Yadav remains a non-starter.The case was instituted in Oct 2025, alleging that the MP, a resident of Chirayyatand locality under Rampur police station in Gaya town, fraudulently obtained an arms licence using a fake address in Sheoganj village under Sherghati police station. The case was lodged just ahead of the assembly elections in which the MP’s son, Bishwanath Yadav, contested the Belaganj seat, considered a stronghold of Surendra Prasad Yadav. Bishwanath lost to JD(U)’s Manorma Devi.Nearly six months on, the investigation has made no progress. Shortly after the case was filed, Sherghati SHO Ajit Kumar had said the alleged offence dated back several years and related records were unavailable at the police station. “It must be there in Arms section of the Gaya Collectorate,” the SHO had said.Sherghati SDPO Ajay Prasad said he was holding additional charge as the regular SDPO post was vacant and, being in temporary charge, he was unaware of the progress made.Attempts to contact arms magistrate Nyna Jha for details, including the background verification and issuing authority, elicited no response.Officials, in private, admitted the case may have been filed in haste, citing discrepancies between the name and address in the FIR and those on the licence. Legal experts said while the licence was issued by a competent authority, if identities are proven identical, officials involved could also face scrutiny.
