Guwahati: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led govt, alleging that it wants to establish a “double Ghulami govt” in Assam and reduce the people of the state to slavery. She accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of acting as a “slave” of the United States and pushing India towards a crisis, while also targeting Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, calling him Modi’s “slave”.Addressing a poll rally in Nazira, where leader of the opposition Debabrata Saikia is contesting as the united opposition alliance candidate, Priyanka alleged that women in Assam are being compelled to work as BJP workers and attend rallies of the PM and CM in exchange for benefits under govt schemes.“In the last election, Modi ji used to say they would run a double-engine govt, but instead they have run a govt of double slavery. Modi ji has become a slave of America, and because of his policies, the entire country is in crisis. And Himanta ji is a slave of Modi ji, and together they want this double-slavery govt to suppress the people of this beautiful and self-respecting state,” Priyanka said.Later, at another rally in Khowang for Assam Jatiya Parishad candidate Lurinjyoti Gogoi, she said, “The truth is they have made the country a slave of America and Israel. Just as Modi ji serves Netanyahu and Trump as a slave, your CM serves Modi ji as a slave. Both want the people of Assam to remain in slavery.” She said Assam is the land of great saints, leaders, and warriors who sacrificed their lives for India’s freedom struggle. “The one who can suppress this public has not been born yet,” she said.Of the three back-to-back rallies, those in Nazira and Khowang were held at tea garden playgrounds on the same day PM Modi began his visit in upper Assam — a community seen as electorally influential in at least 35 assembly constituencies. In Tingkhong, Priyanka alleged that employment is declining, inflation is rising, and the Assam CM is engrossed in corruption. She joined the “Justice for Zubeen” chorus, assuring that iconic singer Zubeen Garg — who died in Singaporean waters last year — was the voice of Assam, but the state govt failed to deliver justice to his family. “Our govt is committed to give justice to Zubeen Garg within 100 days,” she said.On the demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status by six communities of Assam, including the tea tribes, Priyanka said BJP leaders — from Modi to the CM — had promised ST status, but five years have passed without fulfilment. “If they had to give it, they would have given it in five years,” she said.Priyanka said the united alliance, where Congress is a part, is ready to bring a new govt. “We will give you a govt that you will be proud of,” she added.
