Nagpur: Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday said that the supply of high-quality coal from the Gare Palma Sector-II mine in Chhattisgarh will help in reducing electricity tariffs while strengthening Maharashtra’s long-term energy security.Fadnavis said the availability of superior-grade coal with a gross calorific value of around 4,300 will improve efficiency in power generation and bring down overall fuel costs. “Currently, we receive coal with around 2,800 gross calorific value. With Gare Palma coal, less quantity will be required to generate the same amount of electricity, resulting in substantial cost savings,” he said, adding that these savings will directly translate into lower power tariffs for consumers. The CM also emphasised that better-quality coal would not only enhance generation capacity but also reduce environmental impact due to more efficient combustion. “This creates a strong value proposition — lower costs, better efficiency, and environmental benefits,” he said.Fadnavis noted that the Gare Palma coal mine was allotted to Mahagenco as part of a historic decision by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to provide captive coal blocks to state-run power companies. He said that despite multiple challenges, including environmental clearances and land acquisition hurdles, the project has now become operational after nearly eight years of sustained efforts. The chief minister also pointed out that the mine, which has an estimated life of 77 years, will ensure a steady and reliable coal supply, reducing the state’s dependence on external sources. “This is a big step towards fuel self-reliance,” he said.Fadnavis further said Maharashtra is also working on three major coal gasification projects, which could open new avenues for cleaner and more efficient utilisation of coal in the future.
