Ghaziabad: The health department on Saturday issued a public advisory ahead of Holi, cautioning residents against the use of chemical-based colours, warning them that many products sold in local markets may contain harmful synthetic substances.Officials said that in previous years, govt and private hospitals in the district witnessed a spike in patients reporting skin allergies, rashes and eye irritation in outpatient departments after Holi celebrations. District surveillance officer Dr RK Gupta has advised residents to opt for natural or herbal colours and to apply coconut or olive oil on exposed parts of the body before playing Holi. This creates a protective layer and prevents colours from penetrating deep into the skin.“Children are more prone to skin allergies and irritations, especially during the festival, when exposure to synthetic colours and prolonged sun can easily harm their delicate, sensitive skin,” said the official. The department has recommended the use of protective glasses and immediate rinsing with clean water if colour enters the eyes, followed by medical consultation if irritation persists. The advisory also appealed to citizens to avoid excessive consumption of alcohol and tobacco during celebrations. In view of environmental concerns, residents have been urged to use water judiciously. The department further recommended washing hands thoroughly after playing with colours.
