New Delhi: A man and his wife have been arrested for allegedly carrying out a series of chain-snatching incidents across the city. According to police, the husband would ride a stolen scooter while his wife, seated pillion, would snatch gold chains from unsuspecting victims. To avoid detection, the couple first stole vehicles and then used them to commit the crimes. The case came to light on June 25 when a woman was targeted while heading to an aerobics centre in Rishi Nagar. “As she walked past a boutique, a scooter approached her with a man driving and a woman in a pink suit riding pillion. The woman snatched the victim’s gold chain and they sped off,” said DCP (Outer) Sachin Sharma.A case under Sections 304 (Snatching) and 117 (Voluntarily causing grievous hurt) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) was registered at Rani Bagh police station. A special team was formed to trace the culprits.Investigators scanned hundreds of CCTV cameras in and around the area and soon identified the vehicle used in the crime. The scooter’s registration number matched a vehicle reported stolen at Nihal Vihar police station on the same day as the snatching.“Tracking the suspects through CCTV footage led the team to Nangloi, where an informer identified them as Rahul, also known as Mota or Karan, and his female associate — both residents of Sultanpuri,” DCP Sharma said. “By the time police reached their residence, they had fled. However, further intelligence helped locate them in the Hastsal area of Uttam Nagar, where multiple raids led to their arrest.”Police recovered the stolen scooter and the snatched gold chain. Rahul, 30, has a criminal record with 10 prior cases, while his wife is linked to five previous offences. Their modus operandi involved stealing a vehicle and then using it to commit snatchings before abandoning it to avoid being traced.New Delhi: A man and his wife have been arrested for allegedly carrying out a series of chain-snatching incidents across the city.
