Ahmedabad: The Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on Monday seized fake Indian currency notes (FICN) with a face value of Rs 1.59 lakh from Udhna railway station in Surat and arrested one person. The counterfeit notes, all in Rs 500 denominations, were recovered following a tip-off about the movement of fake currency from West Bengal to Gujarat.The arrested individual was identified as Satyanarayan Teli (35), a resident of Mankna village in Surat. He was intercepted by a joint team of Gujarat ATS and Surat detection of crime branch (DCB) officials upon his arrival by the Porbandar-Kaviguru Express train.According to an ATS press release, the operation was conducted under the supervision of ATS superintendent of police (SP) K Siddharth and deputy SP Virjeetsinh Parmar. The raid was executed on the ground by inspector D D Rehvar, sub-inspector M L Solanki, and inspector V R Jadeja, with support and and technical assistance from the DCB Surat.During the search, police recovered 319 counterfeit Rs 500 notes. The accused allegedly acquired the FICN by paying Rs 59,000 in genuine currency to a contact in West Bengal.Initial interrogation revealed that the accused intended to circulate the fake notes locally through small transactions to avoid detection and undermine the economy, an ATS official said.A case has been registered at the ATS police station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Further investigation is underway to trace the supply network originating from West Bengal.
